Reason for the chosen topic

There was one reason why I chose to blog about the Bosnian Genocide and it is an important reason to. The main reason is no one really knows about the Bosnian Genocide. I didn't even know about till this year. The Bosnian Genocide is just one of those world events that people should know about. That way people can learn from it and apply that knowledge to prevent future genocides or horrible mass killings like this one. Blogging about the Bosnian Genocide has also provided a further education about the genocide for me. This will alow me to teach or tell people about the Bosnian Genocide. That way more people know about it and know there has been more than the Nazi death camps or Rwanda. This will all go towards keeping worse or any thing like this horrible event form happening again. That is why I have chosen to make my blog about the Bosnian Genocide.

Attack on UN Safe Haven

During the Genocide there were three towns one of which was called Srebrenica. All three towns including Srebrenica were UN safe havens. That wasn't going to stop the Serbs though. Unfortunatly the serbian forces decided to attack the safe haven on July 11, 1995. The Serbian forces had overwelmed a battalion of Dutch UN soldeirs. Thus placing Srebrenica under Serbian controlle. After they gaind controlle the Serbs seperated all the civilians with in the town. They had put girls and women on buses and had them shiped to Bosnian territory. Sadly some women and girls were raped and or sexualy assulted. As for the men and boys, they were all executed. They were killed either on the spot or sent to different sites for mass killings. There was an estimated 7,000 to 8,000 people killed that were at Srebrenica.

Why this is important

The Bosnian Genocide was a very important event to the world. Even though this genocide was not really the worse genocide to have accured over man's time on Earth. Still, that does not change the fact that thousands of inocent people died. All of them died just because they were Muslim or that was the majority of casulties. This Genocide is something that comes to show just how brutal people can be to other people just because of race or religion. Yet the world still hasn't learned to be able to put aside differences of race or religion. Even today when there hasn't been a genocide in a long time, some people still want other people dead because of religion. Like terrorists or Muslim radicals want Americans dead, only because they're American and Christian. Doesn't sound like a very good reason to kill some one does it? Still people have gone to extreme lenghts such as the Bosnian Genocide to exterminate another race or religion. The genocide has shown even in a more advanced and edjucated society people still can rise to be the worst monster the world has seen, instead of finding a way to coexsist. These kind of events are important because these are the times that people need have learned from and pass that knowledge down to the next generation.

When, What, Who it was

In 1990 the Berlin Wall was torn down. This had been the end of major communist rule in much of Europe. Thus many countries that were under communist rule lost much order and many ethnic groups were trying to become independet nations. In Bosnia there were two main religious groups. They were the Serbian Orthadox Christians and the Bosnian Muslims. In 1990 peace between these two groups had failed and the Muslims were simply mistreating the Christians. This is when Bosnia tried to secede from Serbia, but Serbia did not want that. Instead Serbia invaded saying it was to free the serbian christians from the mistreatment of the muslims. Later on in Between April of 1992 and November 1995 Serbia went into Bosnia to ethnically "clean" Bosnia of muslims. This is when the genocide in Bosnia/Serbia began. After the who thing was over with there had been about 200,000 systematicaly killed. This was the first European genocide since the Holocaust in World War II.

Where it accured

This genocide accured in the country of Bosnia. Before getting into the details of the genocide it's best to know a little of where Bosnia is. Bosnia is a small mountanis country. It borders a few countries which are Croatia, Serbia, Montenegro, Vojvodina. It also borders the Adriatic Sea so it is not entirely land locked. Bosnia is actually the about two thirds the size of the United Kingdom. At about 1980 the population had reached about 3 million people. All who lived a country one thirds the size of the England. Although the population is actually less than half the population of England.
